Kmart says 'NO' to rodeos

28 June 2012 Have your say

Kmart has taken a strong stand against animal cruelty by refusing to sponsor rodeos.

After receiving evidence from Animals Australia detailing the suffering and cruelty endured by animals at rodeo events, Kmart has announced it will not sponsor the Mt Isa rodeo and will steer clear of such events in the future.

A spokesperson for Kmart Managing Director, Guy Russo, has confirmed:

"In light of the evidence that you have provided and outlining for us the potential for animal cruelty and negligence we have made a decision not to continue our sponsorship of the Mt Isa Rodeo. Whilst we believe this is the only Rodeo that we have been involved in, we will look at ensuring no further activities like these are sponsored by Kmart." (Letter to Animals Australia, 14 June, 2012)

Kmart joins another iconic major Australian company, Telstra, in standing up for animals and refusing to sponsor rodeos.

Rodeos are 'entertainment' at the expense of animals. They involve inflicting cruelty on horses, bulls and calves who are often provoked into behaving ‘wildly’ through the use of flank straps, spurs or cattle prods. Animals Australia has monitored rodeos for many years and evidence reveals animals, particularly horses, in a constant state of anxiety and fear. Injuries, deaths and a clear disregard for animal welfare and the standards which govern such events have also been witnessed.

At the Mt Isa Rodeo, investigators have seen fireworks let off over the holding yards where horses were penned; calves being jerked backwards and dragged by lassos around their necks; traumatised horses rearing and scrambling in the chutes, desperately trying to escape — with others falling down in the chutes, having given up.

Rodeo events have been banned in the UK and some parts of Europe and the United States because of their inherent cruelty and likelihood to result in serious injury or death of animals. In the absence of Australian governments acting to outlaw such brutish events, we rely on caring companies like Kmart to take a stand against animal cruelty. After all, rodeos will only exist while there are companies out there willing to support them.

Please join us in thanking Kmart for looking out for animals. If you’re inspired by Kmart’s excellent example, you can pledge to “Say 'NO' to rodeos” too.

Val: A Bear Walks Out Thursday, 6 September 2012 at 7:41pm
After 18 years of hanging out in a Lithuanian Bar, Masa the bear is retiring. The 20 - year - old brown bear was released from her 15sqm cage on Wednesday and handed to animal rights activists who planned to take her to a park in Germany. Masa spent her bar years in a cage next to the door where customers fed her but some complained she was kept in cruel conditions. She certainly was kept in cruel conditions but thankfully she is free now.

Rodeo,
a legalized abuse of animals for COWARDS!

Anyone with a heart knows it's wrong to clothesline a baby animal, body slam it to the ground, tie its legs so it can't move, and drag it by the neck.

If this were done to a puppy or kitten, the offender would understandably be charged with a crime, and likely be jailed. In rodeos, however, it's called calf roping, and supporters claim it's a sport.

Val: Uproar Over Slaughter Sunday, 26 August 2012 at 5:55pm
A MID - WEST community is in uproar after five local children, all aged under 10, allegedly slaughtered farm animals at a local school. The children, one who is aged just six , have been interviewed by police after the animals were attacked at  Meekathara District High School farm. But none of the youngsters can be charged over the shocking crime because they are all under 10, the minimum age of criminal responsibility. Police were called to the school at 6. 55pm on Friday after reports that 14 animals, including geese, peackocks, and chickens, had been slain. Another five seriously injured animals were euthanased. A six - year - old , two others aged seven and two aged eight were interviewed by police with their parents present. Under the WA Criminal Code, the statutory minimum age of criminal responsibility is 10 years. Children under 10 cannot be charged. The school about 800km northeast of Perth, has a farm which is used as an alternative program for children and as an incentive to combat truancy and increase attendance rates. RSPCA spokesman Tim Mayne said offences by children were a serious concern. The correlation between animal cruelty and young offending by convicted murderers was well documented. When young people commit cruelty , it's a real worry. It can be a sign of further things to come, Mr Mayne said. Education Department Mid West executive director Stephen Baxter said the school community was distressed by the incident. The entire school community will be distressed by what has happened to the animals, Mr Baxter said. Police have imposed liquor restrictions in Meekatharra this weekend amid concerns that tensions may flare as a result of the gruesome attack. I hope they do something with these offenders as they can turn into physchopaths later on in life.

Val: Cat Woman Dies Thursday, 23 August 2012 at 6:58pm
As I have been the owner of three cats over twenty years i feel so sorry for this lady. I worry about what will happen to these poor dear cats now their owner has passed away. This piece was in my paper today. A woman has been found dead in her suburban US home, where she lived with about 50 cats. Maricopa County sheriff's deputies were forced to wear breathing equipment to enter the residence in Mesa, Arizona, on Tuesday. They had been called to check on the 64 - year old woman, who apparently died of natural causes. I hope she Rests In Peace now. I hope the cats find new homes.
Val: Abuse Shuts US Abattoir Wednesday, 22 August 2012 at 6:21pm
US Federal regulators have shut down a central Californian abattoir after receiving undercover video showing dairy cows - some unable to walk - being repeatedly shocked and shot before being slaughtered. US officials suspended operations at Central Valley Meat Company in Hanford, California, which slaughters cows when they lose their vaue as milk producers. It's just as well this awful place was shut down for a while. Just think of how many are not closed.Cruel people these are. I hope this dreadful place is shut down permanently. These people should be jailed.

This video is crap....When a calf gets dragged like that it is
'illegal" in australian rodeos, the horses are trained not to do that, and you get in to alot of trouble if this does occur. They have strict rules that apply just like any sport, and there is rarley any injuries to any of the stock used at rodeos, they look to be in top physical health and i can't see the so called cruelty, fear, anxiety, brutality you describe in this video, a horse is still capable of hitting its head in any situation when it is bucking, this is such an over exaggeration if iv ever seen one, its obviously clips from "OLD" videos, as alot of these things have now been stopped or the contractors do everything they are possibly cappable of doing to prevent these things from happening, as their stock is their livelyhood why would they want to hurt them.....if these horses didn't do rodeos they would be dog meat because no equine person would want a horse that bucks or has their attitude (traits) they are no use to anyone else but stock contractors for rodeos, and those calfs would end up on your dinner plate, so i think good on the sport of rodeo and the people supporting it, because in reality these animals would already be "DEAD" in the meatworks, chopped up, packed and sent to serve for your pets or your familys meals if it wasn't for them and this sport. 'SO YEAH I SUPPORT RODEOS'.

Jake: Rodeo cruelty Wednesday, 15 August 2012 at 7:01pm
I often wonder what these rodeo people are like with their own children when they treat these animals with cruelty like the calf roping do they neck their children and drag them around by the neck with their ropes it is sick these people have serious mental issues and how many of these children grow up with mental issues but seriously what enjoyment do they get from hurting those calves

Valerie Avent: Live Export Trade Still Scarred Sunday, 12 August 2012 at 7:27pm
I will put some of this article in i read in my paper. I hope live Exports are Banned. Many industry experts believe Australian's sudden move to cut off another nations food supply last year offended the Indonesians greatly and relations are yet to be fully restored. Typically at this time of year there are about 200,000  Australian cattle fattening up in Indonesian feedlots waiting to be slaughtered. At the moment there is just over half that number and the shortage of quality fresh meat at local markets is bumping up prices. Meat vendors at the Pasar Modern BSD city markets said this week that prices had more than doubled recently. Dayan Antoni , head of government relations and business development at Indonesian feedlotting giant Santori Beef, said Australian Cattle producers should have faith in the Indonesian trade despite the reduced quotas and "cultural" scars that last year's ban created. Mt Antoni believes relations between the two nations could be soothed with Australian investment in Indonesian cattle - breeding. Australian export giant Wellard has spent hundreds of thousands of dollars ensuring the 62 abattoirs and six importers it uses in Indonesia meet the new Exporters Supply Chain Assurance System requirements. As well as the now compulsory electronic ear tags for tracking, Wellard has insisted every animal it is resposible for is stunned before it has its throat slit, to ensure it is unconscious when the slaughter occurs. In the rural ouskirts of Jakarta this week, The Weekend West, witnessed the methodical and precise killing practices undertaken by dozens of abattoir workers and butchers at slaughterhouse Agrisatwa. Hundreds of the beasts sit quietly in feedlots and staff remain silent to avoid distressing the cattle before slaughter, which is over quickly after the animal is stunned in accordance with new welfare requirements. The changes have been major but welcomed by by an industry keen to show it can operate efficiently while prioritising animal welfare, according to Wellard projects and animal welfare manager Catherine Marriott. The changes that are now implemented have gone a long way to securing the long - term viability of the industry, Ms Marriott said. But for the thousands of Australians whose livlihoods depend on exporting Australian cattle, it remains to be seen whether the trade will fully recover from the most tumultous 12 months in history. The size of the Indonesian Government's cut in import quotas of Australian cattle from the 2009 level of 765,000 - to just 283,000. I have been looking at the beautiful cattle in the photo in the abattoir in Indonesia and i feel it's just barbaric to kill such lovely animals . I will never eat meat. The poor dears it's heartbreaking to see them in an abattoir in Indonesia.

Val: Rodeoes Wednesday, 8 August 2012 at 1:37pm
Please don't have the steer wrestling and bronco riding, also other animal cruelty at the Mt Isa Rodeo, in August Mt Isa, because if I lived in Queensland i would be protesting outside the rodeo if i could. I read about this rodeo in a holiday booklet i had and was appalled you still treat animals this way in this day and age. Ban cruel animal treatment now. I won't be going to Queensland rodeoes if i ever go to Queensland. Don't anyone say i won't be missed because i will tell some of my family who go on holiday in Queensland not to go.

Truth be known, the most harden criminals, murderers, rapist, child molesters, etc are treated with more respect and consideration than most animals.  What is it with us humans?  We're not worthy to walk on the same earth as animals!!!

DH: PPP humans dont talk to me about humans Saturday, 4 August 2012 at 7:34pm
I know this is not the blog site for this latest act of cruelty but as  there is not one yet thought I would make some comments on here.

I am at present suffering from the dreaded flu so my spirits are naturally not high and I may be looking at things from a rather pessimistic slant but when I  came across the story of someone breaking into the Tassie Zoo and brutally killing birds
http://www.abc.net.au/news/2012-08-04/dozens-of-animals-let-loose-during-zoo-break-in/4176848 it was the last straw, what sort of sub human does that sort of thing.
Then I see there has been more cruelty exposed towards the treatment of pigs in NSW.. Rodeos are still allowed to take place.   The whole barbaric practice of pigdog hunting still goes on lawfully, come on Australia what sort of country considers it acceptable for one animal to rip apart another all for  the kicks and entertainment of a human. I thought we stood for more than that but maybe I am wrong.  I read an article where one of the so called pigdog hunters said that there was no bigger adrenalin rush for him that to see one of his dogs ripping at a live hanging pig. I think you would be hard press to find that sort of mind  in our prisons and he felt quite safe to express that  level of cruelty was what did it for him.

I just wish there was a way we could change all of this, change the way Australians view animals cruelty because clearly it is not viewed as being serious enough or else all of the above would not be allow to take place. And I have not even begun with Live Export. : PPP humans dont talk to me about humans :-)

Carol: Well done Kmart Friday, 3 August 2012 at 8:46pm
I'm glad there are people out there standing up for these poor defenceless animals. People that treat animals like that have NO heart! How would they like it if they were dragged around with a rope around their neck. DISGUSTING BEHAVIOUR!!!
Haze: Killing pigs Monday, 30 July 2012 at 1:39am
Rife in Qld! Yet again, another totally abhorantly evil treatment of animals.
Common here is for yobbos to get puppies, mistreat, give them no social interaction or affection and starve them all for the purpose of taking them out bush to rip wild pigs to peices. This is what happening in many back yards.  So so sad for not only the pigs, but many beauttiful puppies who are trained to be killers. This evil needs to be scrutinised by our government and legistration put into place to protect all animals involved in this inhumane, nasty, and unnessary  past time, because that is what it is. Want Pork, there are millions of pigs breed in cruel sow stalls you can eat!
One more thing. Is the fact these animal are classed as 'wild' makes it OK to treat them in any way we choose. No it does not! All pigs have been proven to be intelligent, caring and on a par with the domestic dog.

Glenda Clifford: Congratulations Kmart Sunday, 29 July 2012 at 10:14am
I do hope that all such Kmart sponsorships have been withdrawn, not just some of them.  Kmart can still support the local communities in which they operate by offering other help - perhaps some Men's Sheds (and ladies please respect that they are Men's sheds for a reason and don't turn up there!), or Kmart and Rebel Sport could help supply sporting equipment e.g. squash/tennis/pool/weightlifting or whatever gear.  Local councils could prioritise and promote activities which do no harm.  Create local employment by building new sporting facilities.  Men are good at so many things, so encourage them to showcase their skills in non-cruel ways and set a good example to their children.

Susan Lloyd: Enough Suffering Tuesday, 17 July 2012 at 9:26pm
Oh help me;   I have just witnessed the terrible cruelty to wild pigs. It featured on 7.30 report on ABC TV. I can still hear the agonising screams of this poor creature being ripped to pieces by the hunter's dogs as they looked on and laughed, the slaughter seemed to go on forever..  What is wrong with human being why do they just love to see animals suffer? If they treat these wild pigs like this how do they treat they own animals.
Truly friends my heart brakes each day when we hear yet another news report or documentary on the suffering of animals be it dogs, cats, cattle or feral animals. I am sure you all know about Gloucestershire Council's way of culling unwanted pets. Sure the council has changed its policy on shooting animals but how long has this been going on I wonder???
It seems to me that we are becoming more and more like America. They worship guns and this surly is the way Australia is going. If it breaths and it is an animals kill it.
Our dear Leader Barry has sold his soul to the Hunter and Fishers Party so what next from them. I hate to think but it will be black and very bloody whatever it is
